Our Focus
Petersburg CCC offers cultural opportunities through classes, events, and lectures in the
following areas: Agriculture, Creative Arts, Education, History, and Performing Arts.
We understand the significance of the role these areas play in the development, growth, and health of a community
Agriculture
Agricultural classes teach students about agriculture, food, and natural resources. Through this study, students learn and explore concepts in math, science, communications, technology, and leadership management.
Agriculture further aids a community by providing increased access to local, healthy food, supporting the local economy, and benefitting the natural environment.
Creative Arts
People benefit through arts by being able to express themselves. Art stimulates the brain and improves memory.
Involvement in arts programs can increase confidence, concentration, motivation and teamwork.
Arts education is linked to math, reading, critical thinking, cognitive ability and verbal skill.
Participation in arts programs promotes creativity and boosts talents and skills that aid in academic achievement. The arts encourage problem-solving and analytical thinking, which improves decision-making skills.
Education
Libraries play an important role in supporting education and literacy. Patrons visit libaries to find their next read, to ask questions about job applications, resume writing, and filling out government forms, and to connect.
The Petersburg Community Library provides literary resources, educational materials, scientific, art, and historical publications, as well as a variety of classes for patrons of all ages.
The library offers free wi-fi, computer use, business services, and meeting spaces for people looking to network, conduct research, or use technology that may not be available to everyone.
History
Studying history is not just knowing what happened, but making connections and understanding why it happened.
Petersubrg CCC is located in the Morgan Cultural Center, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. As the site of Morgan Preparatory School from 1919 to 1950 and then Petersburg High School from 1950 to 1970, it has played a prominent role in Petersuburg culture for many years.
While restoring and rehabilitating the structure, we are making every effort to maintain the historical integrity of the building while increasing the functionality and usefulness to the community. We have a collection of historical artifacts on display in our entryway and library as well as literature, photographs, clippings, and other historical memorabilia and writings.
